Pali was born in a remote village in Myanmar. In awe of the Burmese people and their traditional weaving methods that have been passed down through generations, our collaboration began. We have since been working closely with our local guide and interpreter, who have enabled us to interact with the villagers and bring their craft to the world.
Myanmar has always had a large rubbish problem. Traditionally, Burmese weavers would collect discarded plastic tape from the gutters and streets and upcycle them into beautiful baskets. Now some of the tape is now bought new, mainly pinks and bright colours, and the use of the tape ensures the baskets are extremely strong and durable. The handle is constructed of repurposed bamboo and top frame is made from upcycled rubber.
The locals, including the monks, use the baskets in their daily lives to carry shopping, fresh produce, flowers and fresh fish.
We work with around 250 skilled weavers, traditionally led by the female head of the village. It takes one day to weave one basket. Each basket sale directly contributes to the welfare of the village.
We are proud to support our weavers, their traditions, amazing skills and entire village community.
